Walk your hood

Even if you have lived somewhere all your life, I guarantee you will learn something new if you do this. Take a walk, park the car, get out and walk. Literally, open storefront doors you have never opened. See who is behind them, quite literally, and explain to business owners that you’re studying what makes up your town. Many people will gladly tell you what they do. We started off visiting local businesses walking around our central part of town. We found an office for a foreign exchange program that we didn’t know existed, talked with the man in charge of the indoor soccer facility, met an attorney, a property manager and hair stylist and found an adorable goldfish pond outside the back of an art studio that we didn’t know was there. Have the kids collect business cards and save them in a 3-ring binder. In this binder have them save pamphlets they collect, brochures about their area, and maps. It’s helpful to have tabs to separate the different sections (maps/walking tour/economics/etc.). If you can, take note of what they think is interesting so you can follow up on it later.
